"To create an attractive urban greenway along the Westerly Creek,

connecting neighborhoods in Denver and Aurora."

Westerly Creek Connection (WCC), a citizen advocacy group, was formed in 2008. This non-profit grassroots organization seeks to facilitate the development of a greenway along Westerly Creek, linking the heavily urbanized areas along the Denver-Aurora border, including the Lowry and Stapleton neighborhoods.

The redeveloment of 9 blocks of green space along the Westerly Creek will incorporate existing parks and an open water channel. Ultimately, this urban greenway can connect communities throughout the metro area, from the Highline Canal in the south to the Sand Creek Regional Greenway in the north.

WCC has adopted the following goals and guiding principles:

creating green space in increasingly urban areas
enhancing public safety with flood protection
encouraging economic redevelopment along East Colfax Avenue and Yosemite Street
providing neighbors with a choice and voice in changes
collaborating with UDFCD and other government agencies
identifying funding for urban pathway development

Shaping the Future of Westerly Creek

On June 2, 2009, the Urban Drainage & Flood Control District presented their final draft report, the Westerly Creek (Lower) Drainageway Planning Study Update, to the community.

The City and County of Denver and the City of Aurora are currently reviewing the document. It should be adopted by the two municipalities by late 2009.

The Westerly Creek Connection (WCC) team also presented their vision for the corridor at the June 2nd meeting. WCC has received funding from the Colorado Water Conservation Board, Denver Public Works, and the Quick Foundation, to develop a Greenway Master Plan for the Westerly Creek. WCC will build upon the hydrology analysis and recommendations in the UDFCD study to create a guide for future development, flood control, and habitat improvements that can enhance environmental, social and economic conditions along Westerly Creek.
